Simon Gamper

Simon Gamper is a composer, multi-instrumentalist, musical director and producer. He writes music for concerts, theatre, film and television – sometimes for all of them at once. His works move between structure and intuition, electronics and acoustics, system and emotion – and especially at the interface between experimental and popular music. They seek a common space where different elements touch without conforming to one another. Gamper's pieces have been premiered by Sinfonietta Riga, the Tyrolean chamber orchestra InnStrumenti, WINDKRAFT – brass band for new music, and at the Bolzano Festival of Contemporary Music, among others. He has played at the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, the Graz Opera House and on ARD's Morgenmagazin, composed the music for the first Latvian western as well as an ORF Universum history documentary, and accompanied Reinhold Messner on a musical journey through his alpine life. In addition to concert music, his work includes numerous theatre productions, films and performances in Italy, Germany and Austria – often at the intersection of text, sound and movement. Simon Gamper was born in Merano and studied at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz. He received lessons from Steven Mead and attended masterclasses with Nebojsa Jovan Zivkovic, Wycliffe Gordon, Susan Blair and Gavin Harrison, among others.
